Bar Beach is a small area of around 15 streets bordering the coast. Bar Beach appeals to families, singles, professionals and anyone who seeks the beachside lifestyle close to the city. The suburb offers mostly prestige freestanding homes, some with beach views.

Bar Beach has a bus services to the central business district of Newcastle, connecting to Broadmeadow railway station which is the main railway hub.

Bar Beach does not have a shopping district, but is very close to the Darby St shopping strip and The Junction Shopping Village which contains a supermarket.

Empire Park is a very large green space opposite the beach, and contains a Skate Park and Bar Beach Bowling & Sporting Club. Cooks Hill Surf Life Saving Club and Nippers is a popular activity for residents of the area.
